Finland Declares Independence from Russia
The Finnish parliament declared independence from Russia following the Bolshevik Revolution, taking advantage of the chaos in Petrograd. Lenin's Soviet government recognized Finnish independence β one of the few concessions it made.
Finnish independence led to a brutal civil war between Finnish Reds and Whites in early 1918, and set the stage for the Winter War of 1939 when Stalin tried to reclaim Finland.
