Finland Declares Independence from Russia

The Finnish parliament declared independence from Russia following the Bolshevik Revolution, taking advantage of the chaos in Petrograd. Lenin's Soviet government recognized Finnish independence β€” one of the few concessions it made.

Finnish independence led to a brutal civil war between Finnish Reds and Whites in early 1918, and set the stage for the Winter War of 1939 when Stalin tried to reclaim Finland.

Outcome

Finland independent; civil war follows; Winter War 1939

Battle of Tora Bora

US forces, Afghan militias, and Special Operations troops close in on Tora Bora β€” a mountain cave complex in the White Mountains near the Pakistani border where Osama bin Laden and hundreds of Al-Qaeda fighters are hiding. CIA officers on the ground beg for US Army Rangers to block escape routes into Pakistan. The request is denied β€” senior commanders do not want to 'Americanize' the fight. Bin Laden and most of his fighters escape across the Pakistani border.

Tora Bora was one of the most consequential failures in US military history. The decision not to deploy sufficient US forces to seal the border allowed the entire Al-Qaeda leadership to escape. Bin Laden would not be killed for another decade. The Taliban's senior leadership similarly escaped to Pakistan, where they reconstituted. The decision to rely on Afghan proxies at the decisive moment cost the US the war's best opportunity to end the conflict quickly.
