Andersonville Prison Camp Opens

The Confederate prisoner of war camp at Andersonville (Camp Sumter) received its first Union prisoners. In 14 months of operation, the camp held over 45,000 men in conditions so horrific that nearly 13,000 died of disease, malnutrition, and exposure.

Andersonville became the most notorious prison camp of the Civil War; its commandant Henry Wirz was the only Confederate officer executed for war crimes after the war.

Outcome

12,913 of 45,000 prisoners die; Wirz hanged in 1865

Battle of Medina Ridge

On February 27, the 1st Armored Division encountered the Iraqi Medina Luminous Division β€” the elite of Saddam's Republican Guard β€” dug into a 15-kilometer ridge line. In what became the largest tank battle of the war, 348 M1A1 Abrams tanks attacked the Medina's 300 T-72s. American tanks engaged Iraqi positions from over 2,500 meters β€” far beyond the effective range of the T-72's fire control system in any conditions, let alone a sandstorm. In less than two hours, the Medina Division lost 186 tanks, 127 APCs, and nearly 1,800 men. The 1st Armored Division lost four killed. The battle effectively ended organized Iraqi resistance.

Medina Ridge β€” 186 Iraqi tanks destroyed with only four coalition deaths β€” stands as perhaps the most lopsided large-scale armored engagement in history, a testament to the M1A1's thermal sights and 120mm smoothbore gun that could kill T-72s at ranges where they couldn't be seen.
