Mary Queen of Scots Executed
Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle after Elizabeth I reluctantly signed her death warrant following Mary's implication in the Babington Plot to assassinate the English queen. The execution required three blows of the axe.
Mary's execution enraged Catholic Europe and gave Philip II of Spain added motivation for launching the Spanish Armada the following year.
