River Raisin Massacre — War of 1812

British forces and Native American allies under Tecumseh attacked an American garrison at Frenchtown, capturing over 500 soldiers. The following day, wounded American prisoners were killed by the Native allies — a massacre that became a rallying cry.

'Remember the Raisin!' became the battle cry for American soldiers throughout the rest of the War of 1812, fueling hatred of the British-Native alliance.

Battle of Isandlwana — Zulus Destroy British Column

Some 20,000 Zulu warriors enveloped and annihilated a British column of 1,700 men at Isandlwana, leaving fewer than 400 survivors. Armed primarily with spears and shields, the Zulus outmaneuvered and overwhelmed a force with modern rifles.

Isandlwana was the worst British defeat against an African enemy and forced a complete revision of British tactics and imperial overconfidence.
