🪖The Great War1916

Brusilov Offensive

The most successful Allied offensive of WWI. Russian General Brusilov attacked on a wide front using coordinated infantry and artillery, bypassing strongpoints rather than battering them. Austria-Hungary suffered catastrophic losses — over 600,000 captured — and never fully recovered as a fighting force. The offensive helped bring Romania into the war and relieved pressure on Verdun.

Brusilov's innovative tactics were the template for the 'infiltration tactics' Germany would use in 1918, and the 'stormtrooper' methods that persisted into WWII. It shattered Austria-Hungary's military power. But the Russian army's own losses accelerated the revolutionary collapse of 1917.

✈️World War II1942

Battle of Midway

The decisive naval battle of the Pacific war. American codebreakers had broken Japanese naval codes and knew the attack was coming. In a few critical minutes on June 4th, American dive bombers found the Japanese carriers refueling aircraft — decks covered in fuel hoses and ordnance — and sank four fleet carriers. Japan lost Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu, along with hundreds of irreplaceable experienced aviators.

The turning point of the Pacific war, fought just six months after Pearl Harbor. Japan lost four of its six fleet carriers and never recovered offensive capability. The US had turned intelligence into a stunning tactical victory. The Pacific war would now be a war of attrition the US was certain to win.
