HMS Hood Sunk by the Bismarck
The German battleship Bismarck struck HMS Hood with a salvo that penetrated the ship's magazine, causing a catastrophic explosion that sank the world's largest warship in three minutes. Of 1,418 crew, only 3 survived.
Hood's sinking shocked Britain and triggered the largest naval chase of WWII, ending when the Bismarck was sunk three days later by the pursuing Royal Navy.
