Battle of Puebla — Mexico Defeats French Empire

An outnumbered Mexican army under General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated French Imperial forces in a stunning victory at Puebla, halting the French advance on Mexico City. France had the most powerful army in the world at the time.

The victory at Puebla became a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign domination and is celebrated as Cinco de Mayo, though France eventually installed Maximilian as Emperor the following year.

Grant's Overland Campaign began in the dense Virginia wilderness. Both sides suffered enormous casualties in confused fighting through underbrush so thick men could barely see. Unlike previous Union generals, Grant refused to retreat — he marched south.

Grant's refusal to retreat after a tactical defeat signaled a new kind of Union warfare. The psychological shift was enormous: the Army of the Potomac kept moving forward.
