German High Seas Fleet Surrenders to the Royal Navy
74 German warships steamed into captivity, escorted by 370 Allied vessels in the largest naval surrender in history. The German sailors, humiliated, would scuttle their fleet at Scapa Flow seven months later rather than let it be divided among the Allies.
The surrender of the German fleet without a decisive battle bred the 'stab in the back' myth β that Germany had been betrayed rather than defeated β which Hitler exploited to come to power.
Outcome
German fleet surrendered; sailors later scuttle fleet at Scapa Flow
