Maximilian Becomes Emperor of Mexico
Austrian Archduke Maximilian accepted the Mexican imperial crown at the invitation of Mexican conservatives and with French military backing under Napoleon III. Liberal President Juárez continued guerrilla resistance from the north.
Maximilian's empire was doomed when France withdrew its troops under American pressure; he was captured and executed by firing squad in 1867.
