Argentina Invades the Falkland Islands

Argentine military forces invaded the British-held Falkland Islands, overwhelming the small Royal Marine garrison. The junta under General Galtieri calculated that Britain would not respond militarily to retake islands 8,000 miles away.

Britain's successful reconquest of the Falklands boosted Margaret Thatcher's government, restored British military prestige, and led to the collapse of the Argentine junta.
