Prince Alexander Nevsky of Novgorod lured a Teutonic Knight army onto the frozen surface of Lake Peipus, where the knights' heavy armor caused them to break through the ice. The battle ended the Teutonic Knights' eastward expansion.
The victory made Alexander Nevsky one of Russia's greatest national heroes and halted the German Crusader advance into Orthodox Eastern Europe.
