The Battle of Nineveh

Near the ruins of ancient Nineveh, Heraclius turned and gave battle to the pursuing Persian army in a dense winter fog. The emperor led from the front, reportedly killing the Persian commander Rhahzadh in single combat, and the Byzantine army destroyed the last major Persian field force in a decisive victory.

Nineveh was the decisive battle of the war and one of the great victories in Byzantine history. With his last army gone, Khosrow's position collapsed, and Heraclius's improbable triumph — from near-annihilation to victory in the enemy's heartland — sealed the Sasanian defeat.

⚔️📍 Yazoo River, Mississippi1862

USS Cairo Sunk — First Warship Killed by an Electrical Torpedo

The Union ironclad USS Cairo struck two Confederate naval mines (called 'torpedoes') on the Yazoo River and sank in 12 minutes — the first warship in history sunk by a remotely triggered electrical mine. The crew survived.

The sinking of USS Cairo demonstrated the effectiveness of naval mines and led to their widespread use, foreshadowing the lethal mine warfare of both World Wars.

Battle of Tolvajärvi

The Battle of Tolvajärvi was Finland's first significant counteroffensive victory of the Winter War. General Paavo Talvela's Group led a well-coordinated attack against the Soviet 139th Division near Lake Tolvajärvi. Using superior knowledge of the forested terrain and aggressive flanking maneuvers, Finnish troops routed the Soviet force, killing over 4,000 and capturing enormous quantities of equipment. The battle demonstrated that Finnish forces could not only hold the line but could destroy Soviet formations in open battle.

The first Finnish counterattack success of the war, Tolvajärvi proved Finnish forces could defeat and destroy Soviet divisions through aggressive mobile warfare in forested terrain. It provided crucial morale for Finnish troops and revealed Soviet vulnerabilities in independent combined-arms operations.
