United States Severs Relations with Germany
President Woodrow Wilson announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Germany in response to its declaration of unrestricted submarine warfare. Wilson had spent years trying to keep America out of the European war.
Severing relations was the penultimate step before war; two months later, after the Zimmermann Telegram and more U-boat sinkings, Congress declared war on Germany.
