Battle of Sheinovo

Russian columns descended from the frozen Shipka heights in a pincer and enveloped the Ottoman army of Wessel Pasha in the valley below at Sheinovo. After Skobelev's assault broke the entrenchments, the entire Ottoman force — over 20,000 men — surrendered.

Sheinovo destroyed the last Ottoman army barring the road south and effectively ended organised resistance in Bulgaria, opening the way to Adrianople and Constantinople.

Battle of Wagon Hill (Boer War)

Boer forces launched a pre-dawn assault on the British garrison holding Wagon Hill and Caesar's Camp near besieged Ladysmith. After a day of brutal fighting, the British repelled the attack with heavy losses on both sides.

The failed Boer assault prolonged the siege of Ladysmith but showed that determined defenders could hold fortified positions against irregular forces.

Final Fall of Owerri

In early January 1970, the final Nigerian offensive overwhelmed the last Biafran defensive perimeter. Owerri fell again on January 9. Ojukwu fled to Ivory Coast on January 10, leaving General Philip Effiong in command of a state that no longer had territory to defend. Effiong and the Biafran High Command surrendered to Nigerian General Yakubu Gowon on January 15, 1970, ending the thirty-month war.

The final collapse came with terrifying speed. The last Biafran pocket contracted within days as soldiers abandoned the impossible defense of a starving, shrinking enclave. Effiong's surrender broadcast — in which he denied that the war had been 'genocide' in accordance with Gowon's conditions — was a moment of extraordinary dignity in desperate circumstances.
