Siege and Battle of Vienna
Kara Mustafa Pasha arrived before Vienna with perhaps 150,000 men in July 1683 and began a methodical siege, driving mines toward the city walls while Starhemberg's garrison of 15,000 held on by improvised countermining and desperate sorties. By September the walls were breached and the city was days from falling. On September 12, a relief army of some 70,000 under Sobieski descended from the Kahlenberg in the largest cavalry charge in recorded history — 18,000 horsemen, led by 3,000 Polish winged hussars, swept down the hillside and into the Ottoman camp. The Turkish army broke and fled, abandoning its siege works, artillery, and the grand vizier's tent.
The turning point of Ottoman expansion in Europe. The defeat ended the last serious Ottoman threat to central Europe and triggered the formation of the Holy League, which would spend the next sixteen years driving the Ottomans from Hungary and the Balkans. Kara Mustafa was executed for the failure. The date is still commemorated in Vienna and Poland.

Storming of the Bastille — French Revolution's Defining Moment
Parisian crowds stormed the Bastille fortress, a symbol of royal tyranny, killing its governor and releasing seven prisoners. The fortress held only barrels of gunpowder and a handful of inmates but its fall became the iconic moment of the French Revolution.
Bastille Day remains the French national holiday, and the storming of the Bastille became the worldwide symbol of popular revolution against tyranny.
