Trinity — World's First Nuclear Bomb Test

At 5:29 a.m., the world's first atomic bomb was detonated at the Trinity test site in the New Mexico desert, producing a blast equivalent to 21 kilotons of TNT. The fireball was visible 160 miles away. Oppenheimer recalled the Hindu scripture: 'Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.'

Trinity inaugurated the atomic age and gave the United States a weapon that would end WWII and define global politics for the rest of the 20th century.

Outcome

Nuclear age begins; atomic bombs dropped on Japan 3 weeks later
