Allied Bombing of Rome — Vatican City at Risk

American bombers attacked Rome's rail yards and marshaling areas for the first time, dropping 1,168 tons of bombs within three miles of the Vatican. The raid killed over 1,500 civilians and destroyed the 4th-century Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura.

The bombing of Rome, combined with the fall of Sicily, directly triggered Mussolini's overthrow five days later — the most significant political consequence of any strategic bombing raid.
