The Battle of the Catalaunian Plains

As Attila's Huns and their subject peoples ravaged Gaul, the Roman general Aetius assembled a grand coalition of Romans, Visigoths, Franks, and other peoples to stop them. The two enormous hosts met somewhere near Châlons in a daylong battle of appalling slaughter. The Visigothic king Theodoric was killed, but Attila was checked and withdrew to his camp; the next day he retreated from Gaul.

Châlons was one of history's most consequential battles — the first major defeat of Attila and the halting of the Hunnic tide in the West. It was also, poignantly, a victory won largely by barbarian allies fighting under a Roman banner, dramatizing how the late empire survived only by harnessing the very peoples who were dismembering it. Aetius, 'the last of the Romans,' was murdered three years later by the emperor he had served.

Tennis Court Oath — French Revolution Begins

Locked out of their meeting hall by royal order, members of the National Assembly gathered on a nearby tennis court and swore not to disperse until France had a constitution. The oath defied the absolute authority of King Louis XVI.

The Tennis Court Oath was the decisive act of defiance that transformed a fiscal crisis into a revolution, leading within weeks to the storming of the Bastille and the collapse of the ancien régime.

The Siege of the International Legations

For fifty-five days, some 900 foreign soldiers and civilians and around 3,000 Chinese Christians barricaded themselves in the Legation Quarter of Peking, defending an improvised perimeter against Boxers and Qing soldiers with rifles, one antique cannon dubbed 'the International,' and desperate improvisation. The German minister had already been murdered in the streets. Food ran short and the defenders were nearly overwhelmed several times before relief arrived on August 14.

The siege of the legations was the dramatic heart of the crisis, a fifty-five-day ordeal reported breathlessly around the world that galvanised the eight-nation intervention and became the defining image of the Boxer Rebellion in the West.
