Allied Forces Secure Normandy Beachhead — D-Day+3
Three days after D-Day, Allied forces had consolidated the five Normandy beachheads and began linking them into a continuous front. Despite fierce German counterattacks, the lodgment was secure enough that the campaign's ultimate success seemed assured.
The establishment of the Normandy beachhead within three days of D-Day validated Allied planning and guaranteed that the second front Stalin had demanded since 1941 was finally open.
Outcome
Beachhead secured; liberation of France begins
