Anschluss — Germany Annexes Austria

German troops crossed into Austria and were met with cheering crowds as Hitler's homeland was incorporated into the Third Reich. Austria ceased to exist as an independent state and its Jews immediately faced the same persecution as German Jews.

The Anschluss demonstrated that the Western powers would not resist Hitler's expansion and emboldened him to demand the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia six months later.
