Battle of Centla
Barely ashore in Mexico, Cortés fought a Chontal Maya army on the plains of Centla near Potonchán. Outnumbered many times over, he held the Maya with crossbows and cannon, then broke them with a cavalry charge from the flank — the first use of horses in battle on the American mainland. The Maya, who had never seen the animals, reportedly took horse and rider for a single monstrous creature.
Centla established the tactical pattern of the entire conquest: firearms and steel to hold, cavalry to shatter, and the terror of the unfamiliar to do the rest. In the settlement that followed, the defeated Maya presented Cortés with twenty women — among them the woman baptised Marina, La Malinche, who would become his interpreter and the indispensable voice of the conquest.

Siege of Haengju
Gwon Yul held a hilltop earthwork with about 3,000 men — soldiers, monks, and civilians — against perhaps 30,000 Japanese, who attacked in nine successive waves. The defenders used hwacha, wheeled racks firing over a hundred rocket-propelled arrows at once, and threw the attacks back all day. The women of the fort carried stones in their aprons to the walls; the aprons are remembered in the name *haengju chima*.
One of the three great Korean victories of the war and the one that proved the land war was not lost. Ten to one, and the fort held — because the ground was steep, the hwacha were murderous at close range, and Gwon Yul had prepared the position properly. The Japanese abandoned Seoul within weeks and withdrew to a chain of coastal fortresses in the south.

Russia Ratifies Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
The Russian Congress of Soviets ratified the humiliating peace treaty with Germany, surrendering Poland, the Baltic States, Finland, and Ukraine — one third of Russia's European territory and half its industrial capacity. Lenin accepted the terms to save the Bolshevik revolution.
Brest-Litovsk freed a million German troops for the Western Front and gave Germany its greatest territorial gains of the war — both reversed when Germany lost in November 1918.

Lebanese Civil War1978
Operation Litani — First Israeli Invasion
Following a PLO coastal road attack that killed 38 Israeli civilians, Israel launched Operation Litani on March 14, 1978, sending 25,000 troops into southern Lebanon up to the Litani River. The operation aimed to destroy PLO infrastructure and push Palestinian fighters north of the river. Israeli forces occupied a strip of southern Lebanon and created a client militia, the South Lebanon Army, to hold the territory.
Operation Litani established the precedent for large-scale Israeli military action in Lebanon and created the South Lebanon Army proxy force. It also generated UN Security Council Resolution 425 calling for Israeli withdrawal and creating UNIFIL, whose presence would prove inadequate to prevent further conflict.
