My Lai Massacre — Vietnam War

U.S. Army soldiers from Charlie Company systematically murdered between 347 and 504 unarmed South Vietnamese civilians, including women, children, and elderly, in the village of My Lai. Lieutenant William Calley ordered the killings; other soldiers refused to participate or attempted to stop them.

When the massacre was exposed 18 months later, it became the defining atrocity of the Vietnam War and turned many Americans against the conflict.

Chemical Attack on Halabja

Iraqi aircraft and artillery deployed a cocktail of mustard gas, sarin, tabun, and possibly cyanide-based agents against the Kurdish town of Halabja, which had been briefly captured by Iranian forces and Kurdish Peshmerga. Up to 5,000 civilians died within hours — entire families found in their homes, in the streets, at water fountains. It was the largest chemical weapons attack against a civilian population in history. The world watched; nothing decisive was done.

Halabja was a crime against humanity committed with weapons whose precursors were supplied by Western firms, using delivery systems sold to Iraq by nations that then blocked UN Security Council condemnation. The Reagan administration initially suggested — falsely — that Iran might have been responsible. The Halabja massacre became the central exhibit in the 2003 Iraq War's humanitarian justification, even as the US had been complicit in its occurrence fifteen years earlier.
