Battle of Agnadello
Pope Julius II assembled the League of Cambrai — France, Spain, the Empire, and the Papacy all at once — to destroy Venice, and at Agnadello the French shattered the Venetian army in an afternoon. Venice lost its entire mainland empire in a matter of weeks.
The high-water mark of Italy's humiliation, and a lesson in the wars' logic: the same Julius who organised the destruction of Venice reversed his alliances within two years to expel the French he had invited, then reversed again. Machiavelli watched this from a Florentine desk. Venice survived by conceding everything and waiting, and eventually got most of it back — proof that in this war diplomacy outperformed armies.

David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel hours before the British Mandate expired. The following day, the armies of Egypt, Transjordan, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon invaded.
Israel's independence and the resulting war created the State of Israel, displaced 700,000 Palestinian Arabs, and initiated a conflict that continues to shape the Middle East.
