Berlin Surrenders to Soviet Forces
German General Helmuth Weidling surrendered the Berlin garrison to Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov, ending the Battle of Berlin that had raged since April 16. Some 125,000 German troops were taken prisoner while the city lay in ruins.
Berlin's fall ended the Third Reich's capital and marked the practical end of WWII in Europe, though formal German surrender came six days later.
