First Battle of Ypres Ends — Western Front Stabilizes

The First Battle of Ypres ended with both sides exhausted and the front lines settled into the trench systems that would define the war for the next four years. Germany's last attempt to break through to the English Channel had failed.

First Ypres established the Western Front stalemate that would cost millions of lives for three years; the war of maneuver was over and the war of attrition had begun.
