Battle of Tarawa — Marines Assault a 'Fortress Atoll'

U.S. Marines captured Betio Island — just 300 acres — after 76 hours of the most intense fighting in Marine Corps history. Of 4,500 Japanese defenders, only 17 surrendered; 1,000 Marines were killed in an area smaller than Central Park.

Tarawa's horrific losses for such a tiny objective shocked the American public and forced a complete overhaul of amphibious assault tactics for the rest of the Pacific War.
