Battle of Passchendaele Ends — 500,000 Casualties for 5 Miles

Canadian troops captured the ruined village of Passchendaele, ending the Third Battle of Ypres after three months of fighting in liquid mud. The Allied advance of five miles had cost approximately 500,000 total casualties on both sides.

Passchendaele became the symbol of WWI's futile slaughter — men drowned in shell craters as armies advanced at the cost of thousands of lives per hundred yards.
