Battle of Talana Hill

One of the opening battles of the Second Boer War was fought on a rocky hill near Dundee in Natal, where Boer forces under Lucas Meyer had occupied commanding heights and opened a bombardment on the British camp below. British infantry under General Penn Symons advanced in close formation across open ground under artillery and rifle fire — using exactly the tactics that the veldt and Boer marksmanship made suicidal. Penn Symons himself was mortally wounded leading from the front. The British eventually drove the Boers from Talana Hill at significant cost, but their cavalry pursuit was badly mismanaged and many Boers escaped.

Talana Hill was technically a British tactical success but strategically meaningless — the Boers simply withdrew and continued the campaign. The battle illustrated the fundamental tactical problem the British would face throughout the early war: Boer riflemen armed with modern Mauser rifles, fighting from prepared positions in broken terrain, could extract enormous casualties from British infantry advancing in traditional formations. Penn Symons's death — caused by his practice of leading advances on horseback to encourage his men — removed one of the most aggressive early British commanders.

MacArthur Returns — 'I Have Returned'

General MacArthur waded ashore on Leyte Island in the Philippines, fulfilling his 1942 promise 'I shall return.' He broadcast: 'People of the Philippines: I have returned. By the grace of Almighty God our forces stand again on Philippine soil.'

MacArthur's return was one of WWII's great dramatic moments and fulfilled America's moral obligation to the Philippine people who had suffered under Japanese occupation.

Death of Gaddafi

Muammar Gaddafi was found hiding in a drainage culvert outside his hometown of Sirte, discovered when a NATO airstrike destroyed his convoy attempting to break out of the besieged city. Rebel fighters beat and abused him before he was shot. The International Criminal Court had issued a warrant for his arrest, but no one intervened. His killing was filmed on mobile phones and broadcast worldwide — a violent, undignified end for a man who had ruled Libya for 42 years and reimagined himself as the 'King of Kings of Africa.'

The Oslo and St Petersburg Talks

On October 20, 2026, Steve Witkoff met Zelenskyy in Oslo alongside Norway's prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finland's president Alexander Stubb, with Jared Kushner joining remotely; a US official said the talks covered 'key elements of a comprehensive peace framework.' The next day Witkoff spent more than three hours with Putin at the Konstantin Palace outside St Petersburg, his ninth in-person meeting with the Russian leader. Ushakov said Moscow was 'in principle' ready to resume trilateral talks with Ukraine and the United States, possibly in Abu Dhabi in mid-November; Zelenskyy wanted them no later than early November. The diplomacy ran alongside the worst strain in US–Ukrainian relations of the war. Trump had waived new sanctions to secure a deal to buy Russian diesel, which Zelenskyy called a 'reward' for Putin, and had said it was 'time for somebody else to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine,' while Zelenskyy accused the Pentagon of holding up interceptor missiles European countries had already paid for. Russia freed the American Stephen Hubbard as Witkoff landed. Russian strikes killed two people in a Kyiv high-rise the same day.

Revived the trilateral format first tried in Abu Dhabi and Geneva early in 2026. The Kremlin also said a first-ever Russia–US–China summit was being prepared in China for November. Whether any of it produces a ceasefire depends on the same unresolved question as every earlier round: who guarantees Ukraine afterward.
