⚔️📍 Tenochtitlan, Mexico1520

La Noche Triste — Cortés Nearly Destroyed by Aztecs

Actually occurring on June 30, this date marks when Cortés and surviving conquistadors regrouped after the 'Sad Night' retreat. The Spanish were ambushed while retreating from Tenochtitlan, losing two-thirds of their force and most of their gold and cannons.

Despite near-total defeat, Cortés regrouped and returned to destroy Tenochtitlan — showing the resilience that made Spanish conquest of the Americas possible.

Outcome

500 Spanish killed; Cortés escapes; returns to conquer Aztec Empire

🔔The American Revolution1781

Siege of Yorktown

Washington and the French General Rochambeau marched their combined armies 400 miles south from New York in secret. The French fleet under de Grasse defeated the British navy at the Battle of the Chesapeake, cutting off Cornwallis by sea. Surrounded by 16,000 Franco-American troops and pounded by French siege artillery, Cornwallis's position became untenable. On October 19, 1781, 8,000 British soldiers marched out to surrender — their band playing 'The World Turned Upside Down.'

The last major military engagement of the Revolution. Parliament voted to end offensive operations in America, and peace negotiations began. The Treaty of Paris in 1783 formally recognized American independence.
