Balangiga Attack

September 28, 1901 · Samar Theater

Filipino victory in the attack itself; followed by the devastating American pacification of Samar.

September 28, 1901

At breakfast on a Sunday morning, the church bells of Balangiga signaled hundreds of bolo-wielding townspeople and guerrillas — some disguised as women mourners, their weapons hidden in coffins — to fall on Company C, 9th U.S. Infantry. Forty-eight of the 74 Americans were killed, the worst American defeat of the war.
