The Jewish-Roman Wars

66 – 136 AD

Three catastrophic revolts by Jews in Judea and across parts of the diaspora against the Roman Empire — the Great Revolt (66–73), the Kitos War (115–117), and the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132–136). Rome destroyed the Second Temple, repeatedly devastated Jerusalem and Judea, suppressed diaspora communities, and after Bar Kokhba barred Jews from Jerusalem while reorganizing the province as Syria Palaestina. Large Jewish diaspora communities long predated these wars, but warfare, enslavement, migration, and demographic change accelerated the shift of Jewish life toward communities outside Jerusalem and Judea.
