From Constantinople, the emperor Justinian I sent his brilliant general Belisarius to reconquer the lost West — smashing the Vandal kingdom of Africa in a single campaign and wresting Italy from the Ostrogoths in a war that ruined the peninsula. The eunuch general Narses finished it, but the reconquest was fleeting, and it left Rome and Italy shattered on the threshold of the Middle Ages.
