Battle of Clontarf — Brian Boru Defeats the Vikings

High King Brian Boru led an Irish army to victory over a Viking-Irish alliance near Dublin, breaking Viking military power in Ireland forever. Brian Boru was killed in his tent by retreating Vikings after the battle was already won.

Clontarf ended Viking dominance in Ireland and made Brian Boru Ireland's greatest legendary hero, though it also created a power vacuum that weakened Ireland before the Norman invasion.

Battle of Quingua

Young General Gregorio del Pilar's entrenched troops ambushed an American cavalry reconnaissance near Quingua, pinning it down and killing Colonel John Stotsenburg when he arrived with reinforcements at the head of the Nebraska infantry. Only after artillery came up was the Filipino line finally broken.

One of the Republic's better tactical showings — a reminder that behind earthworks, with steady troops, the Army of Liberation could punish American aggressiveness. The action made the 23-year-old del Pilar famous; Clark Air Base's original name, Fort Stotsenburg, honored the colonel who fell here.
