Red Stick Creek warriors attacked the crowded stockade of Fort Mims, overwhelming the garrison and killing between 400 and 500 settlers and militiamen in one of the worst massacres of the frontier era. Only 36 people escaped.
The Fort Mims massacre galvanized American public opinion and led to Andrew Jackson's Creek War campaign, culminating in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend and the destruction of Red Stick Creek power.
