Treaty of Paris — Spanish-American War Ends

The United States and Spain signed the Treaty of Paris, formally ending the Spanish-American War. Spain ceded Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines; the U.S. paid Spain $20 million for the Philippines.

The treaty made the United States an overseas empire for the first time, acquiring territories 6,000 miles from its shores and launching its role as a Pacific power.
