British Forces Capture Jerusalem from the Ottomans
General Edmund Allenby's Egyptian Expeditionary Force captured Jerusalem from Ottoman forces, ending 400 years of Ottoman rule. Allenby dismounted and entered the city on foot out of respect, in contrast to Kaiser Wilhelm who had ridden in on a white horse 19 years before.
The capture of Jerusalem fulfilled the Balfour Declaration's promise of a homeland for Jews in Palestine and set the stage for the conflicted Middle East of the 20th century.
