George Washington Dies at Mount Vernon

George Washington died at age 67 of acute epiglottitis — worsened by the medical treatment of the era, including massive bloodletting. He had been ill for just two days. Congress declared a month of mourning.

Washington's death removed the one figure who had held America's fragile democracy together through force of personal prestige and example.
