Battle of Tricamarum

Gelimer, reinforced by his brother Tzazon's army returned from Sardinia, made a final stand at Tricamarum. Belisarius's cavalry charged the Vandal centre in successive waves; Tzazon was killed, the Vandal line broke, and Gelimer fled. He surrendered months later after a siege in the mountains, and was paraded in Belisarius's triumph at Constantinople.

Tricamarum ended the Vandal kingdom outright. In barely a year Belisarius had reconquered Roman Africa, captured the Vandal royal treasure, and handed Justinian a triumph unseen in Constantinople since the days of the old empire.

Battle of Kesselsdorf

The 75-year-old 'Old Dessauer' led a Prussian allied force against the Saxon-Austrian army defending Dresden. Attacking uphill into fortified positions, the first assault was repulsed with heavy losses. The Old Dessauer rallied his men personally, pushed up a second time, and broke the Saxon line. Dresden fell the next day.

Kesselsdorf effectively ended the Second Silesian War. Dresden's capture forced Austria and Saxony to the negotiating table, producing the Treaty of Dresden that confirmed Silesia as Prussian territory and ended Prussian participation in the wider war.

Battle of Nashville

After Hood's Army of Tennessee marched north following Atlanta's fall, Gen. George Thomas — 'the Rock of Chickamauga' — methodically prepared a massive counterattack at Nashville despite intense pressure from Grant to attack immediately. On December 15, Thomas struck in a powerful two-day assault that shattered Hood's army completely. Union cavalry pursued the broken Confederate columns for miles. Hood's army of 54,000 was reduced to perhaps 15,000 fugitives.

The most complete Union tactical victory of the war. The Confederate Army of Tennessee was effectively destroyed as a fighting force, never to fight again as a coherent army. This freed Sherman to march north through the Carolinas and close the vise on Lee from the south.

Battle of Nashville — Confederate Army Destroyed

Union General Thomas launched a massive assault on General Hood's Confederate Army of Tennessee, which had been weakened by months of failed offensives. Over two days, the Union army enveloped and effectively destroyed the Confederate force.

Nashville eliminated the last Confederate army capable of offensive operations in the western theater, leaving Sherman free to devastate the Carolinas.

Battle of Colenso

The third defeat of Black Week came at Colenso, where General Buller attempted to cross the Tugela River to relieve Ladysmith. Louis Botha, commanding the Boer defense, used the same invisible-trench tactics pioneered at Magersfontein — concealing his men below the riverbank and in kopjes (rocky outcrops) rather than on obvious hilltops. British forces advancing to the river crossing found themselves under fire from positions they could not locate. Two artillery batteries advanced too far forward and were abandoned when their horses were shot; a desperate attempt to rescue the guns cost five Victoria Crosses in one of the most celebrated acts of the war. Buller called off the attack after losing 1,100 men without crossing the river.

Colenso completed Black Week and brought about the most dramatic crisis of confidence in the British Army since the Crimean War. Buller sent a famous telegraph to Ladysmith suggesting that White should consider surrendering — an act of defeatism so shocking that it effectively ended his command career. Lord Roberts was appointed overall commander with Kitchener as his chief of staff. The battle also confirmed that Botha was one of the war's most gifted commanders, capable of conducting a masterful defensive battle with irregular troops against a professional army.
