Congress Declares War on Japan — 'A Date Which Will Live in Infamy'

President Roosevelt addressed a joint session of Congress the day after Pearl Harbor, calling December 7 'a date which will live in infamy' and requesting a declaration of war. The Senate voted 82-0; the House 388-1, with pacifist Jeannette Rankin the only dissent.

America's entry into WWII ended its isolationism and permanently established it as a global power that could not stand apart from world affairs.

Fall of Damascus — Collapse of the Assad Regime

In the early hours of December 8, 2024, opposition columns — the Southern Operations Room advancing from Deraa, HTS from the north — entered Damascus essentially unopposed. Bashar al-Assad had already fled by aircraft to Moscow, where Russia granted him asylum; his own army and government learned of his departure from the news. Crowds pulled down statues of Hafez al-Assad, and the gates of Saydnaya prison were opened, releasing thousands of detainees and exposing the machinery of a carceral state that had disappeared tens of thousands of Syrians. Fifty-four years of Assad family rule, and thirteen years of civil war fought to preserve it, ended in eleven days.

Ended the Assad dynasty and the Syrian Civil War as it had been fought since 2011. Simultaneously destroyed Iran's land bridge to Hezbollah and Russia's guaranteed Mediterranean foothold — the single largest geopolitical shift in the Middle East in a generation.
