Battle of Toulon

The largest naval action of the war, fought off the coast of Toulon between a Franco-Spanish fleet and the British Mediterranean squadron. Admiral Mathews attacked before his line was properly formed, violating Fighting Instructions. The Franco-Spanish fleet escaped largely intact, though two Spanish ships were taken.

Toulon was a British tactical failure that nonetheless led to a celebrated court-martial drama: Mathews was cashiered for breaking the line, while his more cautious subordinate Lestock was acquitted, prompting a rethinking of British naval doctrine. The escape of the Franco-Spanish fleet freed France to project power in the Mediterranean.

Battle of Buena Vista

Santa Anna marched an army of roughly 15,000 north from San Luis Potosí to destroy Taylor's reduced force of fewer than 5,000 men near the hacienda of Buena Vista. In two days of desperate fighting in a mountain pass, American artillery and the Mississippi Rifles regiment — led by Colonel Jefferson Davis — repeatedly broke Mexican charges. Santa Anna withdrew despite his numerical advantage, claiming victory but effectively ending offensive operations in the north.

Buena Vista was the climax of Taylor's northern campaign and the last major battle he would fight in Mexico. The defense of the pass against overwhelming odds made Taylor a national legend and the inevitable Whig candidate for president in 1848. Jefferson Davis's performance with the Mississippi Rifles launched his political career. The battle effectively ended the war in northern Mexico.

The Final War and the Death of Savimbi

After the failure of a second peace deal in the 1990s, the MPLA army — now well-funded by Angola's booming oil revenues and no longer facing a superpower-backed foe — waged a relentless campaign to destroy UNITA, driving it from its towns and back into the bush. On February 22, 2002, government troops finally tracked down and killed Jonas Savimbi in a firefight in the eastern province of Moxico.

Savimbi's death ended the war almost overnight. Within weeks UNITA signed a ceasefire and disarmed, transforming into a political party. After twenty-seven years and perhaps half a million dead, Africa's longest Cold War proxy conflict was finally over.
