Marines Raise Flag on Mount Suribachi

U.S. Marines raised an American flag on the summit of Mount Suribachi on the fourth day of the battle for Iwo Jima. A second, larger flag-raising was photographed by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press and became one of the most iconic images in military history.

The photograph inspired a war bond drive that raised $26 billion, became the model for the Marine Corps War Memorial, and symbolized American determination in the Pacific War.
