Britain Introduces Military Conscription

The Military Service Act received Royal Assent, making military service compulsory for all British men aged 18–41 for the first time in British history. Voluntary enlistment had proved insufficient to replace the catastrophic losses of 1914–15.

Conscription transformed Britain from a volunteer to a mass-mobilization military power and signaled that the war would be far longer and bloodier than anyone had anticipated.

Outcome

2.5 million additional men conscripted by war's end
