Spion Kop — Afrikaans for 'Spy Hill' — became one of the bloodiest and most chaotic battles of the war. British forces under Warren seized the summit in a night assault, only to find at dawn that they had not taken the true crest: Boer positions on higher ground commanded the British trenches with plunging fire. The main British trench was a shallow scrape in rocky ground — there was no soil to dig properly — that offered almost no cover from fire coming from above. Men died in heaps in a space smaller than a football pitch. Boers on three sides poured fire into the trapped British while Boer artillery added shrapnel. Both sides' commanders briefly considered abandoning their positions simultaneously — but the British withdrew first, leaving 243 dead on the summit.
