Fall of Khartoum — General Gordon Killed

Mahdist forces under Muhammad Ahmad stormed Khartoum and killed the British commander General Charles Gordon two days before a relief force arrived. Gordon had held the city for ten months against a vastly superior besieging army.

Gordon's death made him a Victorian martyr, humiliated the Gladstone government, and fueled British determination to reconquer Sudan — accomplished at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898.

Fall of Barcelona

The fall of Barcelona was both a military event and a human catastrophe. As Nationalist columns entered the city on January 26, the streets were largely empty — the population had already fled. The roads north to France were clogged with hundreds of thousands of refugees: soldiers, families, government officials, artists, and intellectuals. France hastily opened its border, interning the refugees in squalid beach camps at Argelès-sur-Mer. The war was effectively over.
