Soviet Forces Liberate Auschwitz

Soldiers of the Soviet Red Army entered the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp complex and found approximately 7,000 surviving prisoners. The Nazis had already evacuated over 60,000 prisoners on death marches westward.

Liberation of Auschwitz provided the world with undeniable evidence of the Holocaust's industrial scale; January 27 is now observed as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
