U.S. Marine Corps Established by Congress
President John Adams signed legislation reestablishing the United States Marine Corps as a separate military branch, following its dissolution after the Revolutionary War. The Marines were needed for service aboard naval vessels in the Quasi-War with France.
The Marine Corps would go on to fight in every major American conflict and become famous for amphibious assault operations, particularly in the Pacific War.
