Medal of Honor Established During the Civil War

President Lincoln signed legislation establishing the Medal of Honor for enlisted Army soldiers, the nation's highest military decoration. The Navy Medal of Honor had been signed into law months earlier, and the Army officers' medal followed in 1863.

The Medal of Honor became a symbol of supreme valor in combat; over 3,500 have been awarded since the Civil War, including 19 at the Battle of Iwo Jima.
