USS Chesapeake vs. HMS Shannon — War of 1812

Captain James Lawrence sailed the USS Chesapeake out of Boston to meet HMS Shannon in a single-ship duel. The Shannon captured the Chesapeake in just 15 minutes — one of the quickest single-ship actions of the age of sail. Lawrence, mortally wounded, ordered 'Don't give up the ship!'

Lawrence's dying words became the motto of the U.S. Navy and are emblazoned on the battle flag carried by naval ships to this day.

Syrian Military Intervention

In June 1976, Syrian President Hafez al-Assad sent some 40,000 troops and 800 tanks into Lebanon under the banner of an Arab Deterrent Force, ostensibly to restore order. Assad's intervention was strategically paradoxical: he intervened against the Lebanese National Movement and PLO — nominally his allies — to prevent their total victory, which he feared would provoke a devastating Israeli response and destabilize his own border region.

Syria's intervention fundamentally reshaped the war by blocking a PLO-LNM victory and establishing Syrian influence over Lebanese territory that would persist until 2005. It demonstrated that Lebanon had become an arena for regional power competition rather than a purely domestic civil conflict.

Operation Spiderweb

Ukraine’s Security Service carried out drone attacks against Russian air bases using systems launched from concealed positions inside Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said 41 aircraft were hit and that aircraft representing 34 percent of Russia’s strategic cruise-missile carriers had been affected. Those figures are Ukrainian official claims and do not establish how many aircraft were destroyed.

The most consequential asymmetric operation of the war and possibly of the century so far: a non-nuclear power destroyed a third of a nuclear power's strategic bomber fleet with cheap drones and a logistics trick. Every air force in the world reassessed the survivability of aircraft parked on open aprons.
