Battle of Tours — Charles Martel Halts Muslim Expansion

Frankish leader Charles Martel defeated the Umayyad Caliphate's army at Tours, killing the invading commander Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi. The Franks' disciplined infantry squares repulsed the Muslim cavalry charges.

Tours halted the northward expansion of Islam into Western Europe; some historians call it one of the most decisive battles in world history, preserving Christian Europe.

Israeli Counterattack on Syria

After halting the Syrian breakthrough in the Valley of Tears, Israel launched its counteroffensive — not just back to the 1967 ceasefire line, but beyond it, into Syria itself. Israeli armor advanced to within 40 kilometers of Damascus before halting. Iraqi and Jordanian reinforcement brigades, rushed to help Syria, were destroyed in fierce armored battles. Israel's guns could shell Damascus's outskirts.

Israel's advance into Syria proper — the first time Israeli forces had moved on Damascus — created massive pressure for a ceasefire. Syrian artillery was within range of the Golan civilian population; Israeli artillery was within range of Damascus. The threat of Syrian regime collapse brought Soviet pressure to bear. The advance also destroyed the Jordanian and Iraqi brigades sent to aid Syria, humiliating the Arab coalition's attempt at solidarity.
