Aguascalientes Convention

October 10, 1914 · Aguascalientes, Central Mexico Theater

Convention produced a provisional government that Carranza refused to recognize; Villa and Zapata's forces occupied Mexico City but could not govern it; Mexico descended into multi-faction civil war.

October 10, 1914

The revolutionary factions attempted to create a unified government at a grand convention in Aguascalientes. Villa's División del Norte and Zapata's Ejército Libertador del Sur formed an alliance against Carranza. The convention voted to remove Carranza as First Chief and appointed Eulalio Gutiérrez as provisional president. Carranza refused to recognize the convention's authority and withdrew his forces to Veracruz. The failure of Aguascalientes meant the revolutionary forces would now fight each other in a second, even bloodier civil war.
